Reel Overview
This reel highlights my work across multiple productions within the Virtual Art Department (VAD), showcasing real-time previs, environment layout, scene assembly, lighting development, asset modeling, texturing and UV layout. The selected shots represent contributions to large-scale virtual production pipelines supporting on-set visualization and final cinematic direction.
Key contributions
– Environment layout and worldbuilding for real-time stages
– Previs/techvis for action and narrative beats
– Shot design: set layout, alignment, lensing, and movement
– Lighting and LookDev for director scouting and reviews
– Scene assembly and optimization for VP workflows
Production Context
The Virtual Art Department serves as an early visualization and scene development team for large-scale film productions. These sequences support director exploration, real-time reviews, and on-set virtual production workflows.
Responsibilities
My work included environment layout and vis-dev, previs/techvis, scene assembly, lighting development, and LookDev—including kitbashing, modeling, and texturing. Several elements were refined to final-pixel quality, while others supported visualization, editorial reviews, and broader virtual production workflows.
Pipeline & Tools
Unreal Engine, Maya, ZBrush, Substance Painter, 3DEqualizer (digital set-extension alignment), proprietary layout tools, real-time lighting tools (including Wētā’s Gazebo and Lumberjack), and real-time review workflows.
Challenge
The existing digital magazine has an outdated design that doesn't resonate with the modern audience. Navigating through articles is cumbersome, and engagement is low due to the lack of interactive elements.
Solution
The challenge is addressed by implementing a responsive design, using innovative typography to make content visually engaging, introducing interactive elements like multimedia features, and categorizing articles effectively for easy navigation. The result is a fresh, reader-friendly magazine that keeps users engaged.
Intersecting Strategy with Design
Through in-depth strategic discovery and integrating our findings into the design process, we told the story of who Modern Read really was. We conveyed the most authentic brand elements to clearly represent Modern Read in each design feature possible. By entirely recreating their logo and establishing a fresh color palette, we brought new energy into Modern Read. We laced their passionate strategy into every avenue of the elevated brand identity to reestablish Modern Read as the truest version that they could be.
The result is a shining testament to the successful fusion of strategy and design, ultimately revitalizing Modern Read's brand identity.
